Inspiration

The idea with this project was to design a building with inspiration drawn from an artifact of importance that a friend or relative brought with them when entering the country. In my case, the artifact (see right) is a good luck charm that a family member brought from Japan. These charms are used as protection against harm or danger, and this one has kept my family member safe for many years, as well as being a reminder of her family back home who gifted her the charm. What I wanted to pull from this artifact was the feeling of safety and being loved.

Location

The project was based on an existing building in downtown Sacramento.

Concept

My concept for this project was a hug as inspired by the artifact I chose above. The building utilizes curved and arced walls to create rooms and spaces which embrace their visitors, using interwoven wicker materials on the furniture and some key walls to further infer this feeling. The idea is to create a shelter which functions as an embrace, where all visitors are safe and welcome.
